Custom Interlocking Patios, Walkways & Driveways
Enhance your home's curb appeal and outdoor living space with durable, professionally installed interlocking stone. Engineered with proper base preparation to withstand Ontario's harsh freeze-thaw cycles and backed by complimentary 3D design services.
Why Proper Installation Matters in Ontario
Installing a new driveway, patio, or walkway is a significant investment in your property. In Central Ontario, hardscaping projects face unique environmental challenges that generic installations simply cannot handle.
Between deep winter freezes, spring thaws, heavy clay soils, and the weight of snow removal equipment, a poorly installed patio or driveway will quickly sink, shift, or heave.
At Northern Lakes Contracting, we don't cut corners on what you can't see. The secret to a driveway or patio that lasts decades isn't just the stone on top—it's the foundation underneath. We excavate to the proper depth, install commercial-grade geotextile fabric, and compact layers of specialized aggregate base to ensure your interlocking stone stays perfectly level year after year.

Engineered for the Elements
Built specifically to handle Ontario's freeze-thaw cycles without shifting.

Why Northern Lakes Contracting Is Different
Every contractor promises "quality workmanship." Here's what actually separates a lasting installation from one that fails in two winters.
Proper Base Preparation
We excavate to the correct depth for Ontario's frost line—typically 12 to 18 inches for driveways. Geotextile fabric and layered Granular 'A' aggregate prevent settling, sinking, and heaving before it ever starts.
Built For Ontario Winters
Every material we select, every base depth we excavate, and every edge restraint we install is chosen with one goal: surviving Simcoe County winters. We account for freeze-thaw expansion, heavy snowplow pressure, and road salt exposure.
Quality Materials Only
We source premium Permacon, Techo-Bloc, and natural stone products from reputable Ontario suppliers. We don't substitute lower-grade pavers to cut costs. The stones you see on day one are the same quality we stand behind years later.
Precision Installation
Interlocking stone is only as good as the slope and leveling beneath it. We laser-level bedding sand to precise tolerances, ensuring consistent drainage slope away from your home and a perfectly flat finished surface.
Residential & Commercial
From private driveways to condominium walkways and retail plaza entrances, we have the equipment and experience to handle jobs of all sizes. Commercial clients benefit from the same precision standards as residential projects.
Attention To Detail
Edges are perfectly cut. Patterns are meticulously aligned. Polymeric sand is activated correctly. We do a final inspection walkthrough with every client before we pack up. The finished product should look like the pictures—because it does.

Real Transformations — Before & After
Nothing tells the story better than a side-by-side transformation. Here are three recent hardscaping projects completed for Ontario homeowners.

Front Entrance & Driveway Upgrade
Cracked concrete driveway replaced with Permacon interlocking stone. New walkway added to the front entrance, with proper drainage slope installed away from the foundation. Project completed in 3 days.

Backyard Patio, Fire Pit & Seating Wall
Plain grassed backyard transformed into a complete outdoor entertaining space. Custom interlocking stone patio, natural stone seating wall, and a built-in fire pit installed. Designed to add long-term value and year-round usability to the property.

Front Walkway & Landscape Lighting
Old concrete walkway replaced with a premium interlocking stone path. Added fresh mulch beds, new plantings, and integrated low-voltage LED landscape lighting to enhance safety and nighttime curb appeal.
Our Proven Installation Process
We follow strict industry standards to ensure your patio or driveway outlasts the competition. Here is exactly how we build your project.
Excavation & Base Preparation
The most critical step. We excavate to the required depth—typically 12–18 inches for driveways, 8–12 inches for patios—to get below the organic topsoil and frost zone. Ontario's heavy clay soils require thorough excavation because clay holds moisture, which expands when it freezes and pushes surfaces upward. We install commercial-grade geotextile fabric to separate subsoil from base aggregate, preventing fine particles from migrating into the gravel and causing settlement. This single step is what separates a 5-year patio from a 30-year one.
Aggregate Base & Compaction
We add Granular 'A' gravel in measured layers called lifts, compacting each layer heavily with a vibratory plate compactor. Proper compaction creates a dense, stable platform that transfers load evenly and resists freeze-thaw movement. Skipping layers or using the wrong aggregate is the most common shortcut taken by inexperienced crews, and it always results in shifting and sinking within the first two or three winters.
Screeding the Bedding Layer
A precise 1-inch layer of concrete sand or High-Performance Bedding (HPB) is carefully spread and leveled using screeding rails. This bedding layer is what allows the interlocking stones to be fine-tuned to a perfectly flat, properly sloped surface. We set drainage slopes of at least 1–2% away from any structure, ensuring water flows off the surface efficiently rather than pooling and freezing near your home's foundation.
Laying the Stone & Edge Restraints
Pavers are laid according to your chosen pattern—herringbone, running bond, or basket weave—each with structural advantages for Ontario's climate. Herringbone patterns, for instance, interlock mechanically and resist horizontal movement under vehicle loads. Once the field stones are placed, we install commercial-grade plastic or aluminum edge restraints along the entire perimeter, spiked deep into the base with heavy spikes, locking the system together and preventing edge stone migration.
Polymeric Sand & Final Compaction
Premium polymeric sand is swept deeply into all joints, filling them completely. We then compact the entire surface one final time, seating the stones firmly into the bedding layer and ensuring the polymeric sand is packed tight into every joint. Once activated with water, the sand hardens like mortar—dramatically reducing weed growth, resisting ant activity, and locking stones in position. We walk the finished surface with you before leaving, because a job we're proud of looks perfect on the last day, not just the first.
Common Hardscaping Mistakes in Ontario
Many homeowners try to cut costs by hiring inexperienced contractors or attempting DIY installations. In Central Ontario, these mistakes quickly become expensive liabilities.

Insufficient Base Depth
Ontario's heavy clay soils and deep frost lines require significant excavation. Shallow bases lead to heaving and sinking after just one winter, resulting in costly repairs.

Improper Drainage
Failing to grade the patio or driveway away from the home's foundation causes water pooling, ice buildup, and potential basement moisture problems over time.

Missing Edge Restraints
Without commercial-grade edge restraints, the outer stones slowly migrate outward, causing the entire interlocking system to loosen, separate, and eventually fail.

Skipping Geotextile Fabric
Without a woven separation layer, fine soil particles migrate upward into the gravel base over time, reducing drainage capacity and causing uneven settling.
Professional installation ensures your investment withstands freeze-thaw cycles, heavy snowfall, and salt exposure for decades to come.
Best Materials for Ontario Weather
Choosing the right material is crucial for longevity. Here is how popular options compare when exposed to Simcoe County and Muskoka winters.
| Material | Durability in Winter | Maintenance | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Interlocking Pavers | Excellent. Flexible joints prevent cracking during freeze-thaw cycles. | Low. Requires occasional polymeric sand top-ups. | Driveways, Patios, Walkways |
| Natural Stone (Flagstone) | Very Good. Highly durable but requires proper base to prevent shifting. | Medium. May require sealing depending on the stone type. | Patios, Steps, Premium Walkways |
| Poured Concrete | Poor to Fair. Highly susceptible to cracking from frost heave and salt damage. | Medium. Hard to repair seamlessly once cracked. | Garage floors, basic walkways |
| Asphalt | Fair. Softens in summer, brittle in winter. Prone to potholes and rutting. | High. Requires regular sealing and patching. | Large commercial lots, budget driveways |
